The climber without ropes on why he does what he does.
Here’s a nice little video clip that we’ve found of Alex Honnold doing what he does best- living a dirtbag lifestyle out of the back of his van and climbing some ridiculous rock faces without rope.
It’s a beautiful little edit where Alex gets to talk a bit more about his motivations for doing what he does and living like he does. In a nicely matter of fact way, Honnold explains that he lives in a van so that he can climb more. Always on the hunt for the perfect conditions to climb in, he has to remain mobile and so doesn’t really see the practical need for a fixed abode.
Driving around and climbing everyday may not be an option for all of us, but Honnold makes a fair case for himself. There’s not real secret to what he does- just lots of practice. 17 years of climbing have led him to the point he is at now where climbing is his whole life and means of earning a living. Climbing solidly for 17 years has honed his skills so well that he doesn’t feel much need for rope any more. He is so assured of his abilities that he reckons that free-soloing is a purely mental exercise these days.
As his mother said to him, make a conscious decision about what you want to do in life and just head down that route.
I wonder if that included selling whisky? We’re not sure how much whisky this clip is likely to sell, but maybe it will serve to calm the nerves of the viewers new to Honnold’s exploits.
