The Skyrunning circus rolled into Chamonix last week and a day before the big event of the Mont Blanc Marathon was the Vertical KM race.

Despite having to run a marathon on the Sunday, the vertical KM race still attracted some of the big names from the Skyrunning World Series with both Kilian Jornet and Anna Frost competing.

The race involved 1000 metres of ascent in just 3.8km rising up from Chamonix town centre. That race was won, by relative outside Saul Antonio Padua from Colombia who managed to pip favourites Kilian Jornet, world champion record holder Urban Zemmer and ranking leader Marco Facchinelli.

The best way to get an idea of what is involved in a KM vertical is to check out this video from Team Inov-8 at the weekend. Lung-busting probably doesn’t cover it.

Watch out for a naughty word at the end.
