This is the final part of the mini-video series from adidas-sponsored kayaker Jon Hopkins on the joys of kayaking and how to avoid drinking too much of the seawater.
This final video is shows you how far you can take your kayaking. In the case of this video it’s a mile off-shore in water that would be treacherous to normal boats.
For Jon, whitewater paddling is what it’s all about, where all the years of practice and training leads to. Getting to a level where you can paddle on instinct and work with the natural flow of the water.
He does share a few tips though.
Tips for paddling on rough water
- Timing: Essential for success on whitewater. As you reach the top of a wave, that’s the time to make the turn- when the least amount of kayak is in the water.
- Relax: Rolling in rough water can be very confusing.
- Base: The trick is to roll at the base of a wave where there is a stable platform for you to push against and complete the move.
